Eberron - Dreams of Xen'drik
The ruined temple city of Dendera is rarely occupied by anything other than the desert sands. Every few decades, some ambitious clan of nomads or raiders takes up residence in the ruins, and find them to be excellent shelter against the desert. The magic of the ancient Giants has made the stone nearly impervious to the effects of age or the scouring sands, and the structures look only a few thousand years old, not the 40,000 years they undoubtedly are. The new residents never stay there long, and those few who have survived have told tales of terrible monsters still residing there, guardians of the Giant’s treasures, or even the ghosts of the ancient Giants themselves. Despite being an excellent place for an outpost, Dendera usually lies abandoned by any with enough sense to value their souls.
Towards the end of their civilization, the Giants used the city to make mass sacrifices of hundreds or even thousands of elf slaves, all to power the terrible blood magic they used to repel the Quori invaders. Even tens of thousands of years later, the city is still thick with the evil of their acts, and it attracts demons and devils of all kinds to make sacrifices of their own to the dark powers.
